Southern Style Burger

Southern Style Burger

When you think of recipes a food blog will launch with, I guarantee that a burger is not one that comes to mind. This Southern Style Burger was the second recipe we created for Off The Line!

This burger tastes AMAZING but the importance of this burger is that each component can be used in other dishes or by themselves. For example, making the cornbread buns and bringing them to your next Thanksgiving family dinner - an automatic win. Trust us - no one will be talking about the store bought cranberry sauce!

Ingredients for southern style burgers

With this recipe, we've taken each component you would find at a southern, country cookout and have given it our own spin. There's quite a bit of ingredients for this one since we opted in to create our own burger sauce, pimento chevré and bacon jam but if you're in a time crunch, feel free to go with your favorite store-bought items! Here's your grocery list:

Patty

  • ground beef
  • salt and pepper to taste

Pimento Chèvre

  • fresh chèvre (or desired goat cheese)
  • peppadew peppers
  • lemons
  • chives
  • salt

Burger Sauce

  • mayo
  • chili sauce
  • ketchup
  • horseradish
  • worcestershire sauce
  • lemon
  • kosher salt
  • chopped cucumber pickles
  • fresh cracked pepper
  • chopped chives

Bacon Jam

  • bacon
  • yellow onion
  • apple cider vinegar
  • brown sugar
  • molasses
  • maple syrup
  • worcestershire sauce
  • tabasco

Tips for perfectly delicious southern style burgers

  • Don't have time to make every component? Substitute the OTL burger sauce for a mixture of equal parts ketchup and mayo. Swap the lemon and dill cucumber pickles for your favorite store bought pickles. No bacon jam? Just bacon will do! And, substitute the cornbread buns for a burger bun.
  • For the burger sauce, don't be afraid to adjust the spice, saltiness, sweetness, acidity and thickness. The brands you use will have different flavors and consistencies so when in doubt, make it taste how you like it!

This is seriously the best burger ever! It's perfect for a cookout or just when you're craving a summer dish during winter.

Cheers and eat well!

Instructions

Pimento Chèvre

  1. Mix all the ingredients together until the chèvre has a light red hue and are fully blended.
  2. Season to taste with salt.

Burger Sauce

  1. Whisk all the ingredients in a bowl together and season to your liking.

Bacon Jam

  1. In a medium sauce pot, cook the bacon over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally till the bacon becomes slightly brown (about 8 minutes). Pour out all but about 1 tablespoon of the bacon fat.
  2. Add the chopped onions and continue to cook on low heat, stirring occasionally until the onions become translucent (about 6 minutes).
  3. Add the brown sugar, maple syrup and molasses and cook over low heat, while stirring, until all the sugar has dissolved and it forms a nice syrup.
  4. Once the “syrup” begins to bubble, slowly stream in the apple cider vinegar, worcestershire sauce, and tabasco and bring to a slow simmer.
  5. Reduce the heat to low and simmer very slowly, stirring occasionally for about 15-20 minutes.
  6. Season the jam to taste and cool. The jam should be served at room temperature.

Ground Beef Patty

  1. Season each patty with salt and pepper and either grill or pan sear to your desired temperature.
